Winning the SCBWI Portfolio Showcase
What does it take to win the SCBWI Portfolio Showcase? #scbwiWinter22

A Highlights Retreat
What was wonderful about this personal retreat was I had just the right amount of socializing for me. Conferences and workshops give me great information and a lot of socializing opportunities. But not a lot of work time.

A Successful Invasion
At 1 hour 15 minutes, everyone had a disembodied alien head and we were running out of time.

All Tied Up in Knots
I wanted to make a step by step guide for the kids to follow. Some kids learn by having you show them. Some learn by listening to you explain it. And others learn by looking at pictures.

Houston We Have a Problem
I had some tough decisions to make. I like what I did with the applesauce. I like the flowers in the corner. I like the pancake flipping action Paige has going on. I even like the effect I got on Paige’s neck. I especially like the last minute addition of red paint to the stove top.

Rolling the Dice
I could roll the dice and risk missing the deadline or play it safe and risk creating something boring.

Interactive Kids Art Installation
Check out this cool Interactive Art Installation at the Portland Public Library! I made it! I’ve always wanted to do an Art Installation.

Imagery: The Language of Shape
When I’m not sure how to portray an emotion, I like to take a specific book off my shelf and ask Walt what he thinks.

Planning Page Turns
I think writing this blog post, I just figured out what I need to be looking for in my story as I decide page turns.

SCBWI Portfolio Showcase 2022
The Portfolio Showcase and the Virtual SCBWI Conference in February only allows 3 images per illustrator. I asked my social media to help me choose the 3 best.

Using my Jr. High Algebra
I ran off to test out this formula that was going to make everything easier or unnecessary. Until I realized I had solved for the wrong variable.

Thumbnails for Applesauce
I looked back on my thumbnails and knew Paige couldn’t look for applesauce for 2 whole spreads.

Donated Art Supplies
The art teacher at the school had some macrame cord that she said had been donated and wasn’t planning on using. I’m all in on donated art supplies.

A Week of Mini Paintings
After the third day of aliens, however, I was not liking what I was producing. Even positive comments of “adorable” or “I want you to make that one into a big painting” didn’t convince me that I was enjoying the process. I think it is because just like last year, painting every day takes time.

Herve Tullet Inspired Art Club
I decided that perhaps a little art activity would get them out of what they thought they “should” be doing and into finding how they could communicate an impression of a field of flowers.
