Portfolio: Sir Frederick

Sir Frederick the dragon had the good luck of straddling the Christmas Holidays. I think this helped him get into my portfolio. I have/had a hard time drawing dragons. It’s not like I can take a trip to the Zoo to do some character studies or observational drawings that will lead to a character design. A dragon is made up of lizards, birds, and snakes. The closest thing to a dragon in real life is a Komodo Dragon. I discovered that the Bronx Zoo has one. I was already going to New York to see “The Original Art” show and I hoped to talk my friend into stopping in at the the Bronx Zoo to see the Komodo Dragon. But she got sick and then I got sick and when I finally went to the art show, I had already figured out a way to draw a dragon.

In my story, he flies all day and as the sun is setting he finds a cave in a mountain range.

As I was sketching ideas in my sketchbook, I had sketched a dragon ice skating. I loved the Zen of the sketch. In my story he is never at peace and I thought this might be a great image to help me see who he is underneath all the flaws he proudly displays in the story.

Looking at this image right now, I think I should change the shadow on the mountain to extend behind Sir Frederick’s wing. And speaking of shadow, I think I might need to put a shadow under Sir Frederick. There is always something to tweak or something I forgot to do.
