I’m in LOVE…with Collage

I really didn’t think it would happen. I tried doing collage as illustration probably 4 years ago and I absolutely hated it. The illustration was ok, but I hated the process I used. I was impatient with the process and the speed I took to create it.

My brain must have been thinking on it behind the scenes. I kept loving collaged illustrations in picture books. And I kept being drawn to texture. Until I found an artist on YouTube: Art with Em. I followed her, I watched all her videos, I signed up on her patreon.

It was her kitchen cooking collage that was the breakthrough for me. Most of my kids are living on their own. Half of them are in college and have called to get recipes or wanted me to make a cookbook just for college kids. And I’ve never found the time or the desire until I put collage children and recipes together.

The first one was ok. I’m showing it here but I don’t really want to. It didn’t make it to the recipe card stage.

Each one got better and better…

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies

Home Made Granola

Until my critique partner said, “You’re getting good at this.”

Spinach Salad

And now I’m stuck in on this medium and the process I’m developing. My goal is to do at least 24 collaged illustrations before I move onto something else.

It has leaked over into a picture book I’ve been working on.

And with each collage, I get better and better.

Veggie Tacos

So far I’m up to 8 that I’m willing to claim as my own. But there are a couple I’m considering dropping. Which ones are your favorites?

See you next time.
